Sporting Kansas City win 2017 U.S. Open Cup

Sporting Kansas City has come out on top.

Sporting Kansas City has beaten New York Red Bulls 2-1 at Children’s Mercy Park to win the 2017 U.S. Open Cup. This is SKC’s 4th U.S. Open Cup, which ties them with the Seattle Sounders and Chicago Fire for most all-time.

SKC got out to a 2-0 lead before Bradley Wright-Phillips scored in stoppage time to give the Red Bulls some hope. Unfortunately for them, they were unable to score again in the next six minutes of stoppage time.

The goalscorers in the match should also get SKC fans excited, as 20-year-old Latif Blessing and 21-year-old Daniel Salloi both found the back of the net, and are exciting pieces for the future of SKC. Another exciting thing also came out of this victory, as SKC have now clinched a spot as one of the 4 MLS representatives for the 2019 CONCACAF Champion’s League, being the first MLS club to do so, and will find out next season who will join them in the continental tournament.

Though the Open Cup has lost some of its luster in recent years, it’s always nice to add some more silverware to the trophy cabinet, and SKC has done that in an impressive fashion this year.
