Will Giancarlo Stanton end up in a Giants uniform?
Thursday afternoon Jon Morosi of MLB Network reported that the Marlins would likely accept a trade for slugger Giancarlo Stanton in exchange for 2B Joe Panik and two prospects, Tyler Beede and Chris Shaw if the Giants agreed to pay at least $250 million of the $295 million remaining on his $325 million contract. Morosi later reported that “officials” involved in the talks believe Stanton would accept the trade. Stanton has a full no-trade clause so he essentially has complete control of where he will be playing baseball in 2019.
This is not really a surprising development as the speculation has been Stanton would end up in LA or San Francisco since he is from Los Angeles and reportedly wants to head home. What the Marlins are getting in exchange though seems a little sparse in my opinion.
Panik is a solid second baseman, but by no means is he on Stanton’s level. He slashed .288/.347/.421 and earned a WAR of 1.3 in 2017, and has a total WAR of 6.8 over his 4-year career. To be fair, Shaw is a nice addition if he continues to develop. He was the Giants’ first-round pick in 2015 and slashed .292/.346/.525 with 24 home runs between AA and AAA while playing 1B, OF, and DH. Beede, a RHP, is a little more of a question mark though. He was a first-round pick in 2014 and was a top-100 prospect going into the 2017 season, but he struggled in AAA last year, going 6-7 with a 4.79 ERA.
These 3 pieces don’t exactly seem like an appropriate haul for a guy who hit 59 home runs last year and appears to be hitting the peak of his prime. Obviously, if Stanton has told the Marlins he doesn’t want to play there anymore the team has to take what they can get, but I think they can ask for more in return. Granted, if Stanton is only giving the Marlins the option of trading him to the Dodgers or Giants, which is a likely scenario, that doesn’t exactly give the Marlins a lot of great potential prospects to pick from, as the Giants have just the 26th ranked farm system and the Dodgers have only the 9th best group according to Bleacher Report’s post-2017 season rankings.
It will be interesting to see where Stanton finally ends up but keeps your eyes turned towards the west the next of couple days.
