Freddy Adu could be making a comeback.
Freddy Adu was labeled “The Next Pele” when he was drafted by DC United in 2004 at just 14 years old. Adu however, was never able to reach the lofty expectations that people had for him, and the same player who spent time at Benfica and Monaco has most recently added failed stints in the USL and Finnish 3rd division to his underwhelming resume.
Still just 28, Adu may have one final shot at glory with USL expansion side Las Vegas Lights FC. The expansion side is bringing Adu in on trial, as he tries to salvage a once very promising career. Say what you want about Adu, but his love for the game cannot be questioned.
Even as his career continued a downward spiral, Adu kept at it, plying his trade in multiple locations around the world, just because of his love for the sport in which he was once considered one of the world’s most promising players.
Adu’s career may not have gone the way that he, or others, had hoped, but he may have one final shot at glory in the form of a USL trial. It will be interesting to see if Adu makes the team, and how he performs once he gets there.
