Top 75 Recruit James Akinjo Commits to UConn

James Aninjo looks like a great fit at Connecticut.

Head coach Kevin Ollie and the Connecticut Huskies landed their first player for the 2018 recruiting class earlier today in top 75 overall prospect James Akinjo.

He picked UConn over offers from schools like Cal, Iowa State, Maryland, Pitt, and Virginia.  Akinjo took only one official visit and it was to Connecticut, apparently, that was enough to seal the deal.

The Huskies were in or the point guard early on and that carried a lot of weight.

“It was very important to me,” Akinjo said of UConn’s early offer. “It showed how much they care about me and the way I play.

The 6-0, 170-pound point guard ranks as a four-star recruit by all the major recruiting services.

A product of Salesian High School in Richmond, California, he’s known as an intelligent player and projects as a true point guard at the college level.

Coach Ollie’s system also played a big part in him landing at Connecticut:

“I have a lot of trust in Coach Ollie,” Akinjo said. “He knows what it feels like to play in the offense that he runs. He runs a pro-style offense and that is really huge. He understands what it takes to get to the next level.”

Akinjo could potentially step right into the starting lineup if incumbent point guard Jalen Adams decides to turn pro following this upcoming season.

The star guard becomes the first member of UConn’s 2018 recruiting class.
