Trey Burke is heading to Washington to back up John Wall.
The Utah Jazz and Washington Wizards have agreed to a deal that will send Trey Burke to Washington.
In exchange, the Jazz will receive a future second-round pick.
While Burke came to the team with a good amount of fanfare, he largely failed to live up to expectations with Utah.
This is a move we could all see coming as the Jazz actually demoted Burke last season from starting point guard to more of a spark-off-the-bench. He then lost even more playing time after the team acquired Shelvin Mack at the trade deadline.
This off-season Utah acquired George Hill via trade, slamming the door shut on Burke’s time with the Jazz.
Interestingly, Burke was one of a staggering eight point guards that the team currently held the rights to. George Hill, Dante Exum and Raul Neto are already in the NBA, the club picked Marcus Paige and Tyrone Wallace in the NBA Draft and also owns the rights to Olivier Hanlan, who is currently playing overseas.
Moving to Washington is a good opportunity for Burke as he’ll serve as the primary back-up to star point guard John Wall.
The 23-year-old Burke averaged 10.6 points and 2.3 assists in 21.3 minutes a game last season. His best NBA season was actually his rookie year in which he started 68 games, averaged 12.8 points and 5.7 assists a game.
It’s been downhill from there.
Here’s hoping a move to the Wizards can re-ignite his career.
