Value of Arbitration Eligible Players

In an article written by Matt Swartz of Fangraphs, (link at the bottom) he calculates that the average $/WAR estimate for the 2018 season is $11.1 million. What this means is that for every WAR a player is worth, they should theoretically be paid $11.1 million. Today, Josh Donaldson set a record for the highest salary given to a player eligible for arbitration, agreeing to a one-year, $23 million contract to remain with the Blue Jays. Donaldson’s contract beats the record that was set in May by Bryce Harper, who agreed to a one-year, $21.625 extension with the Washington Nationals. Additionally, it should be noted that Kris Bryant also set a record for a contract given to a first-year arbitration eligible player, agreeing with the Cubs to a one-year, $10.5 million contract.

As many teams looked to avoid arbitration with their players ahead of the Friday, 1ET deadline to exchange contract numbers, we will look at some of the contracts signed by arbitration eligible players. From there, we will determine which contracts are the best value for their team by using Swartz’s $/WAR estimate, and comparing it with the actual contracts signed by each player. All WAR totals are from 2017, and are calculated by Fangraphs.
